Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai River is one of the most unique fishing experiences in Alaska. When the run is strong, thousands—or even tens of thousands—of sockeye can enter the river in a single day, giving anglers the opportunity to take home some of the best-tasting salmon in the world.

How Do You Catch Sockeye Salmon on the Kenai River?
Sockeye salmon are not actively feeding once they enter the Kenai River on their way to their spawning grounds. Because of this, anglers use a technique commonly known as “flossing”.
A short cast is made slightly upstream and the hook is allowed to drift naturally with the current. As sockeye travel close to shore, the leader passes through the fish’s open mouth. When the drift is complete (around 4 seconds) the angler, pulls the rod and the hook is set.
The technique takes some practice, but once you get the rhythm down, it can be incredibly effective. Our guides will show you exactly how to make the cast, manage your drift, recognize a fish and safely land it.
No previous fishing experience is necessary.
What Is a Guided Sockeye Trip Like?
During sockeye season, we offer two, six-hour trips each day, with rates at $250 per person.
Morning Trip: 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Afternoon Trip: 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
We use one of our 20-foot power boats (that you board at a private lot off the lower Kenai River) to access productive riverbanks.
Sockeye fishing can be fast-paced when a large push of fish moves through. At other times, patience is part of the experience. Salmon enter the river in schools, and fishing conditions can change significantly from one day—or even one hour—to the next.

Is Kenai River Sockeye Fishing Difficult?
Sockeye fishing is physical, but you do not need to be an experienced angler.
You will be repeatedly casting, standing in or near moving water and fighting powerful salmon. A fresh Kenai River sockeye can put up an impressive fight.
Our guides work with anglers of all experience levels, including guests who have never held a fishing rod before. We will help with technique, fish handling and everything else you need throughout the trip.
What Should You Wear?
Even during the middle of summer, mornings on the Kenai River can be cold. Alaska weather can also change quickly.
We recommend dressing in layers and bringing:
- Warm layers
- Rain jacket
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen

How Many Sockeye Can You Keep?
Sockeye salmon limits can change throughout the season based on run strength and emergency orders issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
During strong runs, limits may be increased. During weaker runs, regulations may remain more conservative.

When Is the Best Time to Fish for Kenai River Sockeye?
The Kenai River has two primary sockeye runs.
The early run begins in June and is largely associated with fish headed toward the Russian River system. The much larger late run typically builds in July, with some of the best sockeye fishing often occurring from mid-July into early August.
However, salmon do not follow a calendar perfectly. Run timing and daily fish passage can vary significantly from year to year.
What Do Daily Salmon Counts Mean?
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game counts sockeye entering the Kenai River during the season, and those numbers are a valuable tool for following the strength and timing of the run.
But a high daily count does not automatically guarantee easy fishing everywhere on the river—and a lower count does not mean nobody is catching fish.
Water conditions, fish movement, fishing pressure, location and timing can all affect success. The counts are one piece of the puzzle, while firsthand experience on the river helps us determine where and how to fish each day.
