The answer depends on what species you’d like to catch and the type of experience you’re looking for.
The Kenai River offers outstanding fishing from June through September, with each month providing unique opportunities for salmon, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden. Whether you’re chasing your first sockeye salmon or hoping to land a trophy rainbow trout, there’s a perfect time to visit. Throw in some King salmon and sockeye salmon fishing on the Kasilof River in June and you are all set.

June

June marks the unofficial start of Alaska’s summer fishing season. Rainbow trout season opens on the upper Kenai River on June 11, offering excellent opportunities to target aggressive trout in clear water before salmon numbers peak. The Kenai River is previously closed to trout fishing from May 1-June 10 in order the for trout to spawn in peace.
The Kasilof River also provides one of the area’s best opportunities to catch king salmon during June. As one of the few remaining hatchery king fisheries in Southcentral Alaska, it’s a favorite among anglers looking for a chance at Alaska’s largest salmon. Our favorite trip to promote is a king salmon and sockeye salmon combo in the last week of June.
Sockeye salmon begin entering both the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers in June, with fishing improving steadily throughout the month. Targeting sockeye salmon in mid-June on the Upper Kenai River is not only a lot of fun, but a sight to see with the sheer number of anglers from the bank.

July

July is one of the busiest and most productive months on the Kenai Peninsula.
The world-famous sockeye salmon runs are in full swing, producing incredible action for anglers hoping to take fresh salmon home. Both the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers offer excellent opportunities, and daily limits are common during peak periods. This season the Kenai River starts with a daily limit of six (6) per person/day.
If your goal is to fill the freezer with fresh Alaska salmon, July is hard to beat.

August
Best For:
- Silver Salmon
- Sockeye Salmon
- Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden
Sockeye salmon typically continues into the first two weeks of the month before tapering off – which is perfect as that’s when the silver salmon begin arriving in strong numbers. Booking just a “fishing trip” in mid-August lets anglers choose between sockeye or silvers – depending on which one is fishing better.
Known for their aggressive strikes and spectacular fights, silver salmon are one of the most exciting fish to target in Alaska. Unless otherwise changed by Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game, we can target silver salmon with bait starting Aug. 16 on the lower Kenai River – using bait caster rods and sitting on anchor from the boat. Its a great way for clients to fight the silvers, but also enjoy a relaxing fishery from the comfort of their seat in the boats.
Rainbow trout fishing also continues to improve as fish begin feeding heavily on salmon eggs. The King salmon that entered the Kenai River in June, start dropping eggs on their spawning beds, allowing guides to target the trout in concentrated areas.

September

Many local guides consider September one of the best months of the entire season.
Silver salmon continue to provide excellent action while rainbow trout and Dolly Varden enter a period of heavy feeding as spawning salmon fill the river with eggs.
Cooler temperatures, colorful fall scenery, and fewer anglers make September a favorite among experienced fishermen and photographers alike.
