Kasilof River Fishing Report
The Kasilof River has once again gotten off to an excellent start and has been producing some outstanding sockeye salmon fishing.
Daily sonar counts have remained consistently strong throughout the past several weeks, with multiple days exceeding 20,000 sockeye salmon entering the river. As of early July, more than 300,000 sockeye salmon have already passed the sonar – bypassing three of the last four seasons at this point.
The strong return has translated into excellent fishing on the water. Our guides have been seeing steady action throughout the day, with anglers regularly hooking bright, fresh sockeye salmon. The Kasilof continues to be one of the best options for families, first-time Alaska anglers, and anyone looking to experience a productive drift boat fishery.
Another encouraging sign came when the Alaska Department of Fish & Game increased the sockeye salmon bag limit to 6 a day on the Kasilof River, a reflection of the strength of this year’s return.
Kenai River Fishing Report
The first run of Kenai River sockeye salmon continues to build as more fish make their way upstream each day.
Fishing on the lower Kenai River has continued to improve. While the fishery has required some patience early in the season, each day has brought more fresh fish into the river. Guides are reporting clients getting their limits, if targeted correctly with the tide.
The Kenai River weir has now counted almost 30,000 sockeye salmon, with July 4 getting 10,893 fish up the river. As more sockeye continue entering the Kenai River throughout July, anglers can expect fishing to become even more consistent.
What to Expect Over the Next Couple Weeks
The outlook for Kenai River remains very promising.
On the Kenai River, expect fishing to improve steadily as larger groups of sockeye continue pushing upstream. Historically, the second half of July is when the fishery really begins to shine, and current numbers suggest this season is following that pattern.
