2026 Kenai River Fishing Season Recap: Salmon, Trout & Another Great Summer

Another Alaska fishing season is officially in the books! As we wrap up our 2026 season at Explore Kenai, we’re looking back on a summer filled with great fishing, returning clients, new faces, and memorable days on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers.

From productive sockeye salmon fishing to an excellent silver salmon season and exciting rainbow trout opportunities, 2026 gave us plenty to be thankful for. We also introduced new conveniences for our guests, including onsite fish processing, making the overall Alaska fishing experience even better.

Here’s a look back at our 2026 fishing season.

Sockeye Salmon Fishing: Plenty of Fish and Full Boats

The 2026 sockeye salmon season brought plenty of action to the Kenai Peninsula. While the overall return didn’t quite live up to preseason expectations on the Kenai River, there were still plenty of fish to catch and many successful days on the water, with the Kasilof River out-performing expectations.

Our guests brought home plenty of sockeye limits throughout the season, and our boats were fully booked during the peak fishing weeks.

As always, salmon fishing can vary from year to year, and even from one day to the next. That’s part of what makes having an experienced local guide so valuable.

Sockeye salmon continue to be one of our most requested trips, especially for visitors hoping to bring home fresh Alaska salmon.

Silver Salmon Fishing: An Excellent First and Second Run

If there was one standout from the 2026 season, it was the silver salmon fishing.

Both the first and second runs provided excellent fishing opportunities throughout the season, keeping our guests busy and our guides on the water.

Silver salmon are always a favorite among our clients. Known for their aggressive strikes, strong fights, and excellent table fare, they’re a great option for both experienced anglers and those visiting Alaska for the first time.

From August into September, we enjoyed consistently productive silver salmon fishing on the Kenai River, making it one of the highlights of our summer.

For anyone considering an Alaska fishing trip in 2027, silver salmon season is definitely worth keeping on your radar.

Rainbow Trout Fishing: Taking Advantage of a Pink Salmon Year

Rainbow trout fishing also delivered another great season on the Kenai River.

With 2026 being a pink salmon year, the additional salmon activity created productive feeding opportunities for rainbow trout throughout the river.

One of the advantages this season was being able to continue targeting trout farther downriver on the Kenai later into the season than we typically would.

This gave us additional opportunities to explore different stretches of water while putting clients on quality rainbow trout.

Whether fishing with experienced fly anglers or introducing someone to trout fishing for the first time, the Kenai River continues to offer an incredible experience.

New Onsite Fish Processing: A Great Addition for Our Guests

One of the biggest improvements to our operation this season was the addition of onsite fish processing.

For guests traveling to Alaska specifically to catch salmon to take home, having convenient access to fish processing makes a significant difference.

The new processing operation was a success, with most of our clients taking advantage of the service throughout the summer.

Being able to coordinate guided fishing trips and fish processing in one location helped simplify the experience for our guests and made getting their Alaska catch ready for the trip home that much easier.

We’re excited to continue offering this convenience in future seasons.

Kenai Adventure Cabins: A Convenient Home Base

Lodging was another successful part of the 2026 season.

Kenai Adventure Cabins continued to welcome guests visiting the Kenai Peninsula for fishing vacations and other Alaska adventures.

Having comfortable accommodations close to the Kenai River, local attractions, and fishing opportunities makes planning an Alaska vacation easier.

For visitors traveling from out of state, combining lodging with guided fishing and convenient fish processing can help take some of the stress out of coordinating a trip.

We’re grateful for another successful summer working alongside Kenai Adventure Cabins and helping guests experience everything the Kenai Peninsula has to offer.

Thank You for Another Memorable Season

As much as we love the fishing, it’s the people who make every season special.

We appreciate every guest who chose to spend a day, or several days, fishing with Explore Kenai in 2026.

From returning clients who have become familiar faces on our boats to first-time visitors experiencing Alaska fishing for the first time, we’re thankful for the opportunity to share these rivers with you.

We also appreciate the local businesses, lodging partners, and members of our community who help make each season possible.
