What makes fishing in Alaska so special?
Alaska offers some of the most productive and scenic fisheries in the world. Explore Kenai can put you on four species of salmon, world-class trout on the Kenai River.
What is the physical difficulty level?
Most trips are beginner-friendly. Some may involve light walking on uneven terrain or getting in and out of boats. Let us know your comfort level and we’ll match you with the right trip.
Yes! Many of our trips are suitable for families with children. We offer shorter excursions, safe equipment, and expert guidance so the whole family can enjoy Alaska fishing adventures together.
Do you accommodate first-time anglers?
Our trips are designed for all experience levels—from first-time anglers to seasoned fishermen. Your guide will tailor the experience to your skill level.
We offer guided Kenai Peninsula fishing charters for salmon, rainbow trout and dolly varden. Trips include Kenai River silver and sockeye salmon fishing, trout fishing, Kasilof River king and sockeye salmon excursions. We also book charters for halibut in Homer, Ninilchik and Seward, and flyout bear-viewing and fishing across the Cook Inlet. Our guides accommodate both first-time anglers and seasoned fishermen.
Explore Kenai can recommend a variety of adventure tours, including wildlife and bear viewing trips, scenic hiking excursions, and Alaska nature experiences. Many of our packages combine fishing with adventure activities for a full Kenai Peninsula experience.
Trip Details
What species can I fish for?
The Kenai River and Kasilof River have four types of salmon – Chinook (King), Coho (Silver), Sockeye (Red) and Humpy (Pink). The runs are as follows:
May – June – First Run of Kings (currently closed to all fishing)
June – First Run of Sockeye
July – Second Run of Kings (currently closed) and Sockeye
August – Second Run of Sockeye and First Run of Silvers
September – Second Run of Silvers
June 11 – October – Rainbow Trout (only on Kenai) and Dolly Varden
What does a typical day look like?
Most days start early, meeting your guide at the private river lot or at a public boat ramp. The guide will walk you through a safety briefing, get you in proper gear and load you on the boat. From there the guide will take you down or up the river and find the best available spots for fishing before returning you to the lot.

When is the best time to visit?
Each part of the season offers something different. We help match your dates with the best fishing opportunities available.
The prime fishing season depends on the species:
Sockeye salmon: Mid-July through mid-August
Silver salmon: Mid-August through mid-September
King salmon: Late May through mid-June on the Kasilof River
Halibut: Year-round in Homer, with peak season June–September
Our guides can help you plan the best time for your preferred catch.
Yes—many guests combine river fishing, saltwater charters, and fly-out adventures into one itinerary.
Fly-fishing trips will be using an Orvis 10ft-7 weight rod with a 7/8 Hydros reel. G.Loomis and TFO conventional rods for all King salmon and Silver salmon fishing.
Dryft Waders and boots will be provided on all sockeye salmon trips. Let you guide know ahead of time what sizes your party will need.
Filleting and cleaning of all salmon that are kept is also provided. Fish processing is an additional fee.
All safety gear – life jackets and safety glasses will be provided as well.

Can you accommodate large groups or corporate trips?
Yes—we regularly host families, groups of friends, and corporate retreats.

Explore Kenai offers comfortable adventure cabins on the Kenai Peninsula, providing a home base for fishing, wildlife tours, and Alaska adventures. While not a traditional hotel, our cabins feature all the amenities you need for a cozy stay and easy access to guided trips.
Our cabins include comfortable sleeping areas, full bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces. They’re fully equipped for families or groups and provide a relaxing base after a day of fishing or outdoor adventures.

On the Kenai River: for most of the season, you’ll meet your guide on the Lower Kenai in Soldotna at a private lot on a canal. Later in the season, you’ll meet your guide on the Middle Kenai River in Sterling at Bings Landing.
On the Kasilof River: You’ll meet your guide either at the Kasilof River Recreational Area or the Tustumena Lake Boat Launch.
Start time also varies, depending on what fish you are after – King and Silver Salmon, and trout fishing trips can start as early as 6 a.m., while sockeye salmon fishing trips start at 5:30 a.m. and noon. Rainbow trout trips will start at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. Alaska requires a fishing license, which can be purchased online prior to your trip.
Yes! Explore Kenai offers a variety of guided-fishing packages on the Kenai Peninsula designed for all skill levels. Our packages include Kenai River salmon fishing, Kasilof River king salmon trips, halibut excursions from Homer, Ninilchik or Seward and flyout trips for bear-viewing and fishing. Many packages can be customized for families, first-time anglers, or experienced fishermen. Each package includes expert guides, all necessary gear, and optional fish processing services, making it easy to enjoy a complete Alaska fishing adventure.
Yes! Dogs are permitted in a select number of our cabins. When booking, request a dog-friendly cabin. A pet-cleaning fee will apply.
What to Bring
What should I bring?
We recommend layered clothing, rain gear, polarized sunglasses, and comfortable footwear.
Can I bring my own fishing gear?
Yes, but all necessary gear is provided.
Do I need waders or boots?
Some trips require them, others don’t. We’ll let you know exactly what’s needed ahead of time. If you are fishing with Explore Kenai on the rivers, we will provide everyone in the group with waders and boots.
What should I NOT bring?
Avoid bulky items, valuables, and anything that doesn’t handle moisture well.
Travel & Logistics
What airport should I fly into?
All trips are based out of the Kenai Peninsula, typically accessed via Anchorage (ANC). The town of Kenai (ENA) also has an airport.
How far is lodging from fishing locations?
The distance from our private-river lot in Soldotna is 15 minutes from Kenai Adventure Cabins.
Do I need to rent a vehicle?
In many cases, yes. Even if you fly into the town of Kenai, a rental car is still recommended for getting around on the Kenai Peninsula.
Most visitors fly into Anchorage, Alaska, grab a rental car and drive about 2.5-3 hours to Soldotna, the base for Explore Kenai. From there, we offer access to the Kenai River and Kasilof River and are located between Homer (1.5 hours) and Seward (2 hours). Visitors can also fly from Anchorage into the town of Kenai and grab a rental card from Avis. Airlines currently servicing Anchorage to Kenai is: Grant Aviation and Aleutian Airways.
Fish Processing & Transport
What happens to the fish I catch?
We have an onsite professional processor who will clean, vacuum seal, freeze, and prepare your catch for transport.
Should I fly with fish or ship it?
Most guests check fish boxes on their return flight, though shipping is also available via overnight options with FedEx and UPS, although pricey.
How much fish can I bring home?
On the Kenai River:
3-6 Sockeye Salmon per day. Sockeye limits can increase, if escapement goals are reached.
2 Silver Salmon per day in August and 3 Silver Salmon per day in September.
We only do catch & release for rainbow trout and dolly varden.
On the Kasilof River:
1 Hatchery King Salmon per day, 5 per season in May and June.
3 Sockeye Salmon per day. Sockeye limits can increase, if escapement goals are reached.

Weather & Conditions
What is the weather like?
Alaska weather can change quickly. Expect a mix of sun, rain, and cool temperatures—even in summer.
What happens if weather affects our trip?
We work with guides to adjust timing or locations whenever possible to still provide a great experience.
Will we fish in the rain?
Yes—some of the best fishing happens in less-than-perfect weather.
Safety Briefing & Required Gear
Are bears or wildlife a concern?
Wildlife is part of Alaska, but encounters are rare. Guides are trained to manage these situations safely.
Will there be a safety briefing?
Yes – before every trip, we conduct a thorough safety briefing to ensure everyone is comfortable, confident, and prepared for the day on the water. Your guide will walk you through boat safety procedures, how to properly use all equipment, and what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency.
Are guides trained in safety and first aid?
Yes—our guides are experienced professionals with safety training (CPR and First Aide) and local expertise.
All required safety gear is provided and easily accessible on board, including life jackets for every passenger, emergency communication devices, noise maker and first aid supplies. Your guide will clearly point out where everything is located during the safety briefing so you know exactly what to expect.
Booking, Deposits & Policies
What is your deposit and cancellation policy?
A 50% deposit is required to secure your trip, with final payment due two weeks prior to arrival. Cancellation terms vary by trip—details are provided at booking.
Do you offer payment plans?
In many cases, yes—just ask when booking.
Do you offer refunds or credits?
Policies vary depending on timing and circumstances, but we always aim to be fair and transparent. We highly recommend the purchase of travel insurance.
Is there a credit card fee?
Yes – when booking a trip with our online portal, there is a credit card fee through Stripe, as well as a processing fee with VallyPro.
Guide Expectations
Is gratuity expected for guides?
Yes—tipping is customary in the fishing industry.
What is a typical tip?
Most guests tip 15–20% based on service and experience.
Travel Protection
Do you recommend travel insurance?
Yes—Alaska trips involve travel, weather, and logistics that can change unexpectedly.
Why do you recommend pairing travel insurance with Global Rescue?
Travel insurance protects your financial investment (cancellations, delays, lost baggage), while Global Rescue provides field rescue and medical evacuation in remote areas. Together, they ensure you’re fully covered both financially and physically.
